The Ability to Adapt – Limitless Mindset Monday #4

[Adaptation] My Answer to. . .

“How do you stay ahead of the competition?”

Most people’s weakness lies in the inability to adapt. You may see proficient technique, you may even see them winning the initial portion of the fight. . .

. . . some chuck it up to toughness in the later rounds, but I believe that it is my ability to adapt.

Everyone has holes in their game, you just have to be patient enough to find them.

Each fighter has slightly different movement, different leverage points and angles at which they kick, punch or execute a technique. If something does not work, frustration sets in. You begin to lose sight of what is happening and you begin to force an opening that is not there.

If you are having a hard time forcing the clinch against a counter hitter you have to stalk your way in, using angles on your way in to close the distance without being countered.

If you are facing a power hitter you want to smother their shots – they will come to you – but your main weapon will be staying relaxed and patient.

A straight forward technician is a tough one to adapt to if they are at a higher level. Using angles and mixing up your distance becomes the key. You have to interrupt them as they step in, not before and not after. Taking away their boxing with kicks to the arm, avoiding step in knees and elbows by angling off as they step in, and off balancing them with teeps and foot sweeps as they step in to kick.

It isn’t always about getting them to “play your game“, instead it is about getting them to play a game that they can’t play.

Adapt. Become Limitless.
