Lead Kick Setups for the Double Kick & Knee – Proper Technique Tip
If you have the right technique when throwing the lead kick you can use it with beautiful variety and purpose; to set the range, to feel your opponent’s reaction with a low risk attack, to deal serious damage to your opponent’s legs, or my favorite, you can use it as a setup to score a body kick and/or vicious knee to the body.
In this week’s Technique Tuesday tutorial, I work with Kru Pot of Diamond Muay Thai to provide you with a quick tip on lead kick technique, avoiding any dangers that may arise with throwing the lead kick. Once the technical issues are addressed, we use this kick as a setup to land a vicious knee or kick to the body. Enjoy and share the knowledge with your teammates:
Quick Tip: Feel where your opponent’s weight is when throwing the lead kick as a setup.
Is he or she firmly planted on the lead foot and looking to come forward after you land it? If so, the knee will be your follow up technique.
Is the opponent mid range and has his or her weight centered? The body kick will be the appropriate technique to utilize.
Is the opponent shifting their weight back and retreating? Slowly stalk in and put on the pressure, but do not follow up, you must first instigate them to walk into the follow up.
