I remember when I first started (Around 2012) a video was going viral of a Sinbi trainer handling Saenchai in the clinch during one of their sessions. Back then I thought that it was solely due to an apparent weight disadvantage.

After my session with the trainer featured in the video himself and having re-watched the video, I learned how far ahead his positioning and control is. My lady and I had the pleasure of working with Kru Pot during our one week holiday in Phuket.

His attention to minute detail (with real purpose, having given me a variety of options to work with) was something that reminded me much of Namsaknoi’s high-level coaching. Kru Pot also asked a lot of questions, and if you have trained at any significant number of Muay Thai gyms in Thailand. . . you know that doesn’t exactly happen often. Per the norm, you just do what you are told, why? Because. Or “because it makes strong”. It’s then usually left at that to continue the rhythm of training.

That wasn’t the case during my visit in both the private and group training. His first questions were not “what stance are you?”, but “what punch feels more strong? what kick feels more strong? where do you feel weak? your favorite style? Last time you hurt in fight, what happen? In clinch, what position you feel strong? Where weak?”

My first round of shadowboxing was a physical and reactionary assessment. He would interrupt some of my movement to spar and to read my reactions to get a baseline to work from. The flow of the sessions reminded me of a doctor or (professional trainer) who assesses their patient’s full history, their habits, their character, and draws upon experience to come up with a diagnosis and treatment plan.

We covered everything from the small details of where to place the hand on the long knee versus a mid-range knee, where to swing the arm when kicking for a “low risk-high reward” outcome, all the way to the adjustments that have to be made in the clinch for the shorter fighter as well as the taller clincher as transitions are made.


Needless to say, I wasn’t in Phuket very long, but a ton of people reach out to me about quality instruction in Phuket and its neighboring areas. Pot now owns his own gym PhuketKing Muay Thai in the heart of Phuket City.
